Itchy Scalp Remedy… continued…

From my last post, this journey is getting tougher, 5 months down, but the best part is I do not have to deal with my hair for now, it is braided. Now from my little research, synthetic hair has an alkaline base which I could be allergic to.  Am not sure it is an allergic reaction or just an itch. I have small bumps on my scalp which are sensitive and painful when I touch them, am hoping it is nothing serious.

Onto the remedy om most blogs: Apple Cider Vinegar(ACV), water and Shampoo.

Now I was supposed to deep the braid into a 1:1 mixture of ACV and water. Then lightly Shampoo it, let it dry and install. However, I already had the braids installed so I had to improvise, and it was time for some shopping.IMG_20150531_153544

Got the American Garden brand, it was the only one available (now white vinegar is what I could try next, on the braid, as I know it could be drying to the hair). Mixed it with same amount of water in a spray bottle.

First I applies shampoo to my scalp only, massaged and hopped into the shower, and let just warm water run through it. Of course the shampoo went all the way to the length. Wrapped it in an old shirt I have (which I still wear, am attached!!! lol) and when it was still damp, I sprayed the ACV+Water mixture abundantly, making sure the whole scalp was covered. and wore a shower cap for 15 minutes, rinsed it out and t-shirt dried again.

When my hair was almost dry, I used Siri Leave-In conditioner. First time using this product. It forms a white foam but once it’s dry, no residue is left. (It at least has ingredients I can read and pronounce with ease- but does minimal for my natural growth)

To combat dryness I massaged extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) on my scalp.

It is so hard to put oil on the hair when it is braided, so I gave up. At least I had a clean scalp. To combat dry hair I have my Holy Grail (water, coconut oil, castor oil, olive oil mixture).

The effect is not as expected, the itchiness is still there (Verdict, it did not help). Maybe with more ACV rinses I will see a difference, will share the experience, but the braids will be washed first before installation. Also, the progress of the bumps and dryness to follow.

Itchy Scalp Remedy.

Hello, Since I stopped relaxing, as mentioned from 20th December 2014, 22 weeks ago, That’s exactly 5months. I have been having a badly itchy scalp. Even with my holy grail (coconut, castor oil and water mixture) nothing seems to work. I have heard of coconut oil helping and soothing an itchy scalp. However, that does not seem to work. I have been having braids for two weeks and a maximum of three. Just beats me how people are able to stay for 8 weeks. Well, targets are set of these. Looking forward to this but I have been faithful to routine. Weekly wash, no deep condition, just leave-in conditioner, sealing it. Moisturize daily in the morning before heading out. Am exciting to see the progress in thickness of my hair, and of course the length, though since am not keen on that since I have been and will be trimming away throughout 2015 as I braid it and strive for more time for braids on my head. I think 4 weeks is not too much to ask. Last time I checked, I had 3 Inches of growth (of natural hair of course) in 5 months. Okay that’s a lot less than 0.5” per month 😦 So I am still looking for that remedy and hopefully it will be a permanent solution since I do not have dandruff, and I have been having weekly washes, so a dirty scalp is out of the question. Maybe before I get commercial products I will try some home remedy,.

Change of Mind

I have been harboring thoughts of transitioning from relaxed to texlaxed hair. It is a good thing I did. So after washing my hair about a month ago, I decided to trim the relaxed, bone straight ends. they were as good as dead and there was nothing I could do to make it better.

The aftermath

So looking at the amount of hair I had cut and the fullness of my roots, I was pleased. I have been installing braided cornrows and still moisturized diligently and used a mixture of coconut oil and castor oil, since castor oil is too viscous. So after take down, two weeks ago, after I had washed and deep conditioned, as I detangled my hair,  a lot ended up in my hands and on the floor. I try to finger detangle before using a wide tooth comb. The breakage was extreme. I did not know what I was doing wrong.

Due to the many blogs I had read and issues to do with hair, (I have a lot of them on speed dial in my browser) I decided to go natural (YYEEEAAAH!!! to that). I mean, let’s face it, my hair has never grown past shoulder length when it was relaxed, and the texlax is not helping. Am tired of breakage, and I know I can at least manage my kinky coils. At least so far I have. Am 19weeks post relaxer. No more creamy crack on my hair, am done. I also noticed my edges, especially the front part of my hairline is sensitive and gets very itchy, and this is the best step towards healthy and fuller edges. Although my coils are loser than I thought and gets really dry. So I will gradually cut off the texlax hair that I have (from my recent touch up in December) as I learn to love and care for it.

Am positive about this. Although I know I will have to go through the awkward stage, the puberty part of my hair where I would wonder what to do to it, say because of the not so short or long enough since I will not be big chopping. I however already lost length to breakage and trimming. As at now am doing protective styling before I get brave enough to wear my hair out.

That Month…

Hello people,

It’s been a while. Been up and down. So it was my birthday on this month on the 12th and wooohoo!!! to turning older, achieving more and hoping for greater ahead. I’ll just say am 21 this year and 20 next year :-).

This post will be a little picture heavy since I’ll be updating on the events of the past month since my last post.

And came the cold mornings, I cannot remember what I was staring at. (Introducing Winnie-Long history) That’s a whole blog post on itself.

And then came my birthday and chocolate was my choice. However, Black Forest tastes better than chocolate cake, just saying..

Being a March baby, so many people around me have birthdays in March. Now for this one, we go way back to college days and we did really dance. I had missed this part of my life.

Jamming to Sura Yako. Believe it or not I caught the Sauti Sol ‘Sura Yako’ frenzy after so many months after its release.

As much as I dominate this picture, the birthday girl is to the left.

Sad Hairffair…

My hair is in a broken state, am disappointed….

I undid my braids and was shocked to find knots and knots of hair  at the ends and had to pull them so the braids came out with hair. Lesson learned, no more coarse hair extension.  Although this was purely relaxed ends, which I had planned to trim over time, I ended up with shorter hair-Setbacks 😦

I went from hair I could hold in a ponytail to, let’s just say, shorter hair.

see the thinning ends which mostly broke off anyway..

At the barber shop, with blow dried hair. Had uneven lengths and told him to chop them off, this is the ‘after’ picture, but they are not even after all. My edges are not in shape, they are transparent at the front. Encouraging myself that I have just started and have a long way to go, so no quick fix. It’s not a sprint it’s a marathon.

Secured the short ends with bobby pins at the back. I always remember to part my hair in different places every two days at the front to prevent hair loss.

A better view. Bobby pins are my best friends as at now.

Until next time,

Hair Progress

Now in 2014, I decided to take a serous hair journey, and to be honest, it wasn’t easy. I have never bothered to know my hair type initially, I only knew hair types were different but now I know better. Now I probably have the kinkiest tightly coiled type of hair. (I think 4c) But am glad it does not bother me anymore.

I took the boldest step and relaxed texlaxed my hair at home on the 20th of December 2014. So I got ORS no lye relaxer in normal strength and I was all nerves, you know, ‘what if something goes wrong’.  Thoroughly detangled my hair, then applied base on the whole of my scalp with some grease I got some time back but never used, covered my previously relaxed hair with the same and had my hair in 4 sections. I thought I had short hair, so i did not clip the sections, big mistake. This just made it hard to go through my hair at the back, I was clumsy and i got even more nervous.

The beginning was a bit smooth, started with the front quadrants, easy and smooth, my timer was on so I was a bit time conscious. The back was hard to do the application. I mostly estimated the unprocessed hair length, and since I did not clip my hair,  I accidentally got relaxer on some of my relaxed hair. I smoothed shortly, and when i looked at the timer, i went into panic mode. 17 minutes down. Now I did not do a strand test so this was a trial, but it was supposed to work out. At exactly 20 minutes, I ran to the bathroom. Washed it fast, fast. Neutralized, Conditioned (all the products were from the ORS relaxer kit) but I added some coconut oil and glycerine to the deep conditioner.

Final results was under-processed hair, which was inconsistent in texture. The panic made me not smooth properly in some areas. Was I happy with the results? Well, I was more than glad. I had very thick 3 inches from the roots and thinning brittle ends, very evident. I was happy to say the least. But exactly two weeks later I braided my hair. This is not recommended but honestly, I need time to really get my game together. So I trimmed it before installing synthetic braids, and washed it every 2 weeks with braids on . I decided to trim 0.5” every month until all the ends are gone. Meanwhile, I will be giving my hair one week break before re-braiding, and probably do a touch up after 20 weeks (6 weeks down), so help me God.

The synthetic braids I had installed, at 5 weeks.

Will be taking pictures of my hair when I undo this.
